Highlights

• REEP Residential’s Houston communities took part in the Houston Apartment Association’s partnership with the YMCA’s Operation Backpack Drive, collecting new backpacks for elementary and middle school aged kids across Greater Houston. 
• On-site teams set up collection points at participating communities, making it easy for residents to drop off a new backpack on their way to the leasing office, the mailroom, or the pool. 
• Residents who donated received a thank you gift, and more than a few stopped by more than once. 
• The drive runs through July 31, and our Houston teams plan to keep collecting until the very last day. 

Why Our Teams Got Involved 

At REEP Residential, we’ve always believed a great community is built on more than well-maintained units and responsive maintenance. It’s built by the people who live there and the neighborhoods around them. When the Houston Apartment Association partnered with the YMCA’s Operation Backpack Drive this summer, our Houston on-site teams didn’t hesitate to sign up. 

The need is real and it’s local. Every August, families across Houston face the cost of getting kids ready for a new school year, and for a lot of households, a backpack is a bigger expense than it sounds like. Operation Backpack exists to close that gap, one backpack at a time, and our residents showed up to help. 

What Happened at Our Communities 

Participating REEP Residential properties set up simple, visible collection points where residents could drop off a new backpack, no appointment or paperwork required. Leasing teams kept the momentum going with reminders at resident events, in community newsletters, and simply by asking residents as they walked through the office.

The response from residents was exactly what we hoped for. Families dropped off backpacks sized for elementary and middle schoolers, in every color from the requested black and clear styles to bright patterns picked out by kids who wanted to donate one just like their own. Every donation came with a small thank you gift from the property, our way of showing appreciation for residents who took the time to give back to their own community.  

A Community Effort, Not Just a Company One 

What made this drive work wasn’t a mandate from corporate. It was on-site teams who care about the neighborhoods they manage, and residents who were glad to have an easy, low effort way to help a local kid start the school year off right. That’s the kind of community REEP Residential works to build every day, one where residents and staff both feel like they’re part of something bigger than a lease agreement. 

There’s Still Time to Help 

Operation Backpack runs through July 31, and our Houston communities are still collecting. If you’re a resident at a participating property, stop by your leasing office to drop off a new backpack, sized at least 16.5 inches, before the drive wraps up. Every donation, no matter how small, helps a kid in your own neighborhood walk into the new school year prepared.
